Find out what you can do to help children enjoy the internet safely by watching or reading Ofcom’s guide which shows how to use parental controls and filters to manage children’s access to digital TV and internet content. The guide also encourages parents and carers to talk to their children about what they do on the internet and how to use it safely.

Ekoloko

ekEkoloko is a virtual world for kids. In Ekoloko students discover the world, both real and virtual, through games and quests. As they play in Ekoloko, students learn and build values, character qualities, knowledge and skills that help them become more responsible and involved individuals. Students learn to respect each other and the environment in the safe online community. While students are in Ekoloko, they are faced with dealing with other characters that are interested in exploring the resources of the world for their own personal benefit.

Missing – Secondary eSafety interactive game

The Missing kit helps children recognize the dangers posed by predators who they meet on-line. The kit includes an interactive CD -ROM game based on the case of a teenage boy who was lured to the United States. The kit also contains a training package for adults, including a Guide for Parents and Teachers and a disc with slide shows and manuals.The Missing game tells the story of a 14-year-old boy named Zack who goes to an on-line chat room and meets a mysterious stranger named Fantasma. Children take the role of detectives, helping both the Canadian and American police by collecting evidence and solving cryptograms.

Social Networking – guidance from the police

This publication comes from the Home Office Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet. Starting with the obligatory explanation of social networking, the range of uses among young people, the legal framework in which social networking providers operate and the development of location-based services for finding and meeting your friends, with the privacy implications involved, the report goes on to consider child development and the psychological issues around identity in young people and the risks opened up or enhanced through social networking tools.

Dive in to Hector’s World!

Hector's World CartoonsHector’s WorldTM comprises five state-of-the-art, animated episodes. It takes children on a journey with Hector and his friends as they explore issues such as personal information, trustworthiness, making positive choices online and how to be open with a trusted adult when they use the internet.

The animation has been adapted for a young UK audience following successful running of the programme in New Zealand and is backed up by a series of free resources available to parents and teachers via the dedicated CEOP education website – thinkuknow.co.uk. All materials have been developed in consultation with Becta and with teachers.
